I was pumped for this one, like heavily pumped. I love Wolverine and loved the Origins comics. I thought what a perfect way to bridge between X-Men films, especially since X3 wasn’t what most had hoped it was (for the record I love all three of the X-Men movies despite their flaws.) But I figured with this, it’s Wolverine, maybe he’ll say bub more and we can finally see him in full tilt action like we’ve always wanted.
My thrill for this movie went ten fold when Arizona won an on-line poll to get the world premiere. Even though tickets weren’t promised me and the wife got in the car and headed to the theater for the big announcement reveal. And to a genuine surprise they gave everyone in attendance a free ticket to the premiere. I also got to meet Dan Harkins, owner of the massive local theater chain, that was a cool thing.
So premiere night arrives, the place is packed as they had every theater showing the film. I didn’t get the one with the actors, but I did see all of them in flesh. Because of our kid I had to go alone figuring none of my friends could make it (My buddy Odom still hasn’t forgiven me to this day for not calling, he would have made time to make it.) But so I was pumped, ready, forced to dress nice, I was ready for this fucking movie.
And I walked out underwhelmed. Bad casting, tossing in characters such as Gambit just to toss him in a film (probably with dreams of a Gambit movie in their head.) Bizarre use of a young Cyclops, toss in White Queen again for no reason, and kinda contradicts later films, and Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth? Come on. Adding insult to injury was having a great comedic actor as Deadpool, the fucking Merc with a Mouth, and he doesn’t seem to know he’s in a movie, which goes against Deadpool! I was nerd raged out.
Granted I haven’t watched it sense and can’t complain too much because it was a free ticket I was throughly upset with the film and walked into First Class tentative. I wasn’t disappointed so that was boss, but this movie did keep me from seeing The Wolverine in theaters. So again, maybe not the worst, but it was one of the most disappointing to this dorky comic book fan.
